Frustration free way of bathing your dog at home

Bathing is not the favorite activity of each dog. Moreover, many dogs do definitely hate it, while other dogs love to dabble, but they prefer rivers or lakes, and not a small bathtub.

The dog owner may do only one thing in this case: he has to start in time to get its pet used to cleaning, already when the dog is still a puppy and he may stimulate with positive reinforcement, with rewards the dog to endure this not too pleasant task. Prior to bathing, all the needed accessories should be placed at hand, because if you will run each minute for the shampoo, for the towel, you can be certain that the dog will have enough of this activity that is not too pleasant for it and within seconds it will disappear from the tub. Although at first glance the task itself seems to be the easiest one for the dog owner from among all the dog cosmetic chores, this is not so. Bathing is a series of tasks that demand a thorough approach, and it has to be done in the case of each species with different regularity and in a different way. Of course a roll in the mud may demand an extraordinary visit to the tub, but usually, in the case of the short-haired and smooth-haired dogs frequent bathing is not required, it is sufficient to wash them twice a year. This is so also in the case of the hard-haired Terriers, for which water may be “fatal” from the aspect of hair hardness. Therefore. they are usually cleaned with dry shampoo. This is also true for the Puli and for the Komondor as well. At the same time, the Yorkshire Terriers are bathed each 2-4 weeks. Of course, each general rule included in the species descriptions has to be given up, if the dog becomes a show dog, because e.g. each Maltese Silky Dog, Yorkshire Terrier, Poodle or Afghan Hound is bathed one day prior to each exhibition, even on each weekend! Bathing may be done only and exclusively after disentangling, removing the tangles throughout the entire fur. It is practical to do the majority of the shaving, trimming tasks before bathing and only the refining steps may be left to be done after bathing and drying.
It is extremely important to select the appropriate shampoo and to apply it as instructed, as I have mentioned it above. The dogs have to be bathed always on a slip-free surface, with running water, with shower. The dog should be never “soaked” in the tub. The method of bathing is also important. First, the entire fur has to be wetted with showering, preferably with hand-luke water, paying attention not to flood the ears and the eyes (we may prevent this by putting our hands there), then the appropriately diluted shampoo has to be applied evenly on the already moistened fur. The fur has to be flushed very carefully with running water after thorough, but not abrasive, not scrubbing washing with shampoo, paying attention not to leave any shampoo on the skin even by chance, since the shampoo left on the skin may cause serious skin problems (eczema, allergy). If needed washing with shampoo may be repeated, then embalming may come. Provided there are no other instructions on the flacon, the balsam has to be left to react for a short time after distributing it over the fur, then it has to be thoroughly flushed off.

After finishing bathing, the dog has to be dried. First - still while the dog is standing in the shower – the moisture has to be pressed out from the fur, then this has to be continued with a towel. Attention has to be paid not to entangle the hairs already disentangled previously when rubbing the dog with the towel. Therefore it is more practical to remove the moisture by pressing, instead of rubbing. You may be certain that the dog will participate in this activity, since the moment the towel is removed from it, it will shake itself “drying” its fur this way. The moisture getting to the ends of the hairs may be mopped up with the aid of a dry towel.

Drying your dog

This may be followed by drying. Many dogs are afraid of the roaring household device, no matter whether it is a vacuum cleaner or a hair dryer.

Unfortunately, again, there is only one solution to prevent this: getting the dog accustomed to it at an early age. The thorough drying of the fur is an indispensable and essential task. The hair dryer has to be set always to a comfortable warmth, paying attention not to be burning hot even by mistake. Drying has to be always done in line with the character of the species. It may be needed to use for this purpose a brush or a comb. In the case of many species, we have to do the drying with one hand, while with the other one we have to brush the fur. In this case, attention has to be paid to prevent the dog jumping away and escaping from this noisy procedure, therefore another contributing person may be also needed, who will keep the dog in position or a leash has to be used. The air coming from the hair dryer has to be always directed to the body part we want to dry and due attention has to be paid to fully dry the bottom of the abdomen, the bends, the ear stems and in the case of the thick-furred species the “flags” and the feet. Dogs with very dense, thick furs and the braid-haired dogs dry very slowly. it is impossible to fully dry their furs with a household, simple hair dryer. In their case, it is far more practical to use water removing devices used in the cosmetic saloons or high capacity hair dryers.
